The envelope, cream-colored and official-looking, had landed with a thud on the welcome mat, and now Sarah was trapped in a whirlwind of internal chaos. She scanned the document, the words blurring before her eyes. The consequences—the moving, the shame, the financial ruin—threatened to overwhelm her.

Her hands flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. She paced her small apartment, a caged animal. Every creak of the floorboards echoed her distress. This couldn't be happening.
