"I've got a job offer in Seattle!" Mark practically bellowed with excitement. He was grinning ear-to-ear, his eyes sparkling. Chloe forced a smile, her jaw tight. Inside, something twisted, a hard knot forming in her stomach.

She grabbed her phone, pretending to be engrossed in a text, avoiding Mark's eager gaze. The vibrant colours of the bar seemed to dim, the music faded into an indistinguishable drone. She felt her face flush, and a stinging sensation prickled behind her eyelids. She needed to get out.
