"I got accepted!" Daniel had exclaimed, his voice ringing with pure joy. He was bouncing on the balls of his feet, brandishing a letter. Across the room, Sarah felt a wave of… something unpleasant. He was moving to Florida for university. She fought to maintain a calm facade, to mirror his enthusiasm.

She offered him a weak hug, her arms feeling heavy and leaden. Later, she excused herself, citing a headache. She locked herself in her room, the silence amplifying the strange, unwelcome feeling that had taken root. She buried her face in her pillow, willing the sensation to dissipate.
