He’d been enjoying a rare moment of peace, reading a book in his favourite armchair, when the doorbell rang. The delivery man handed him the package and left. He tore it open, expecting an ordered book, and found instead a slim, handwritten letter. His fingers went numb.

He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to smash something. He balled his fist, barely resisting the urge to hurl it at the wall. The book slid from his lap, landing with a soft thud. He stood, his chest tight, his breathing shallow. He felt trapped, cornered. The world tilted slightly on its axis. He didn't know what to do.
