Eliza’s hands trembled as she clutched the faded newspaper clipping the historian had given her. A photograph of her house, then. Now her home. The image of flashing lights, the yellow tape, the crowd of curious onlookers. She felt a wave of dizziness, and she pressed her fingers against her temples, trying to ground herself.

She thought of the laughter she shared with her family in the very living room. Now the laughter seemed distant, muted. She felt a deep sense of unease settle in her chest, a weight she couldn't shift.
