"Unbelievable, right?" the plumber said, oblivious to her distress. He whistled as he adjusted a pipe in the kitchen sink. "Crazy what goes on behind closed doors." Sarah felt her stomach twist into knots. The words hung in the air, heavy and inescapable. She wished the plumber would leave, just to get away.

She’d spent months choosing the perfect shade of paint for the walls. Now, the colors seemed garish, the light harsh. She wanted to scream at the walls, to tear them down, to erase the very existence of the place. She felt a profound sense of violation, a deep shame that she couldn't explain.
