He stared at the email, the words a jumbled mess of pixels. The campus, once a vibrant hub of activity, seemed to have suddenly gone silent. It felt like everyone around him was speaking a language he didn't understand, the language of the doomed. His meticulously planned future was now nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

His face burned, a slow and stinging sensation that made him want to hide. He couldn't lift his head. He wanted to sink into the ground, disappear. He thought about the debt he'd accumulated, the sacrifices he'd made. He felt a crushing weight of embarrassment.
