She had a knot in her stomach the entire drive. She'd prepared herself for the worst, but the actual moment of seeing him was still a shock. He was standing near the dance floor, and all the air seemed to leave her lungs. She felt suddenly… discombobulated.

He hadn’t noticed her yet. She took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. She told herself she was fine. But she wasn't. The room swam a little, and she had to grip the edge of the table to steady herself.

When he did finally see her, he simply nodded, offering a tight-lipped smile. She mirrored the gesture. The rest of the evening was a strange, unsettling dance of avoiding eye contact and forced pleasantries. She didn't know what she felt, but she knew it was powerful.
