The keys clattered onto the polished countertop, a sound that echoed unnaturally loud in the empty house. David reached for them, his fingers fumbling. He glanced out the kitchen window to the driveway, where his red sports car should have been. It wasn’t.

He walked outside, peering at the spot where he had left it the previous evening. No smashed glass, no signs of forced entry, nothing. He knelt down, running his hand over the smooth concrete, as if searching for a clue.

His brow furrowed in concentration. He felt a growing disquiet, a feeling of being in a play where he hadn’t been given the script. He opened the car insurance app on his phone, then closed it, and re-opened it. Everything was correct. He was left with an unbearable uncertainty.
