Gemotions

The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of the family room, illuminating the scattered contents of the boxes. Olivia sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by a sea of paper and forgotten memories. She'd been asked to organize things following her mother's move.

She picked up a drawing, one that she had made. It was of a unicorn, complete with a rainbow mane and a sparkly horn. Her mother had kept it. She set it down, a knot forming in her stomach. What was the purpose?

She sifted through a stack of old report cards, her grades staring back at her. Some were good, some were not. It left a strange emptiness. The way her mother had kept everything, including her own failings, was odd.
