The post-tryout pizza party felt like a scene from another planet. Everyone was laughing, celebrating. Yet, Amelia felt like an invisible ghost. She watched the team members from the edge of the bleachers, a knot of confusion forming in her stomach. She’d always believed in her talent, in her dedication. Now, she felt a profound disconnect, as though she were watching a play she didn't understand. She picked at a slice of pizza, the cheese and tomato tasteless on her tongue. Her head was swimming, like she had a fever.
