The lawyer had finished his recitation of the will, and now, finally, they stood at the threshold. Amelia, tall and composed, felt a sudden coldness seep into her bones. Her brother, Samuel, was rambling, talking about renovations. She ignored him, her attention fixed on the front door.

The paint was peeling, and the wood was warped. She pushed it open. The interior was shrouded in shadow. She felt a magnetic pull.

A small, gilt-framed mirror hung in the hallway, reflecting a distorted image of the room. She approached it cautiously, her own reflection staring back with a vacant expression. She touched the glass, a cold shudder running through her. What was this house hiding?

A sudden breeze caused the door to slam shut behind them, plunging them into darkness. Amelia gasped. Samuel, seemingly unconcerned, fumbled for his phone to use as a flashlight.
