The silence of the house pressed in on them, a suffocating blanket. Alex, ever the caretaker, was already making a list of repairs. His sister, Sophie, felt a chill run through her.

She had always loved their grandmother, but this house… it felt wrong. She stood in the master bedroom, feeling its emptiness. The bed was neatly made, a single book lay on the nightstand. She reached for the book.

Its cover was plain, with no title. As she opened it, she realized it contained blank pages. The first page had a single drawing in pencil. She went closer, staring at it.

As her eyes traced the lines of the drawing, a headache built behind her eyes. She put the book down, her hands shaking.
