The antique shop was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of aged paper and polished wood. Evelyn held the wallet, its fine leather worn smooth with age. She’d discovered it in the dusty attic of her new home. Inside, nestled amongst the bills, was a faded photograph.

She ran her fingers over the photograph, studying the faces of the people in it. The money itself seemed almost secondary. She felt a strange pull, a connection to the unknown past. The image sent a shiver down her spine. The old house, which had previously held a promise of new beginnings, seemed to deepen her confusion.
