The tiny, chipped teacup trembled in Liam’s hand. He stared at Chloe, whose face was a study in serene disapproval. Her arms were crossed, her posture rigid against the backdrop of their brightly painted living room. How could she possibly object to a goldfish? "But…it's just a *fish*," he finally managed, his voice barely a whisper. He’d meticulously researched the proper tank size, the best filtration system, the ideal temperature for a fantail. He’d even picked out a name: Finnegan.

A heavy silence descended, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the antique clock Chloe adored. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was doing until his scalp started to ache. What was the *problem*? He'd offered to take full responsibility, to clean the tank, to feed the darn fish. He felt a creeping disquiet, an unease settling deep in his stomach.
