He hadn't been this unsettled in years. A lizard. A green, scaly, cold-blooded lizard. The idea of one living in their home sent a ripple of unease through him. He hadn't been able to eat, and his sleep was restless. How could she not *see*?

He sat across from her at the kitchen table, running his thumb over the rim of his empty coffee cup. The thought of the pet was like a splinter in his mind, causing constant irritation. Why was this so upsetting? The question played on a loop in his mind, and he found he could not get away from it. He felt trapped.

"I just… I don't know, Sarah," he finally stammered. "I really don't." His voice sounded small, uncertain. He felt like he was adrift on a vast, turbulent sea, with no land in sight. His bewilderment deepened.
