The sound poured into the restaurant, washing over Alex. He’d been attempting to enjoy his meal, but now his fork hovered mid-air. The song was the opening track of his album. He recognized it immediately.

He set his silverware down gently. His gaze drifted toward the small stage in the corner of the room. A young woman was on stage, singing. But not quite. The arrangement was… different. The tempo was faster, the notes were altered.

He felt a curious sensation, as if the air around him had suddenly become thin and difficult to breathe. He watched the singer perform, a strange mixture of fascination and unease churning within him.
