The hours crawled by. The first half-hour was filled with tapping on the doors and pushing the call button. After that, they’d tried the roof hatch, though it was locked. Now, all that remained was the waiting.

Mark sat with his back to the wall, his gaze fixed on the floor. His coworker, Emily, was unusually quiet, her usual cheerful disposition replaced with a furrowed brow. The atmosphere was thick with a shared, wordless bewilderment.

His thoughts circled, grasping at some kind of explanation, some thread of logic that would make sense of the situation. He couldn’t find it. It seemed as though the very fabric of reality was starting to unravel.
