My model railway, a painstakingly crafted world of miniature trains and landscapes, had always been my retreat. Now, my son, Thomas, was rebuilding it, transforming it into something unrecognizable. I stood frozen in the doorway.

The intricate details, the carefully placed buildings, were being altered. He had new plans. He was moving things and changing the track system, and everything was now unfamiliar.

“Thomas, what are you doing?" I asked, my voice barely audible.
