“Unbelievable,” Sarah muttered, staring at the screen. The announcement had just landed, and her world had tilted on its axis. Mark, always meticulous, always prepared, was also being considered for the promotion. He was her biggest rival. But he was also exceptionally good.

Her gaze drifted to the window, the city skyline blurring through her tears. A strange hollow feeling began to spread from her stomach. She had prepared, she had planned, she had executed. But now, it felt as though the ground had been swept from beneath her feet.

She kept clicking back over the email, reading and re-reading the words. Why? A question hung in the air.
