The cafeteria buzzed with lunchtime chatter, but Kevin couldn’t bring himself to touch his sandwich. He sat alone at a table, the email open on his phone. The promotion. He and Emily. Emily, who had a less than stellar record when it came to following through on commitments.

He felt a deep sense of… something. He hadn't expected this outcome. He had always believed in his own abilities. He had the right skills, the right experience. Why? He rubbed his temples, a headache beginning to bloom. He felt like he'd fallen through the cracks.

The situation was confounding. He felt strangely disoriented.
