"So, yeah, I'm thinking of accepting the offer in Denver," Maria said, her tone casually upbeat. Emily, usually quick with a witty retort, found her mouth opening and closing without producing a sound.

A wave of heat washed over her, making her cheeks flush. The sun streaming through the window seemed excessively bright, causing her eyes to water. She gripped her hands. She had no clue.

"It's just… wow," Emily managed, her voice barely a whisper. The familiar rhythm of their friendship, the inside jokes and shared memories, suddenly felt fragile, threatened. She felt disoriented, like she had stepped into the wrong scene of a play.
