The silence in the room was almost as jarring as the news itself. David, usually a fountain of stories and laughter, sat rigid on the sofa, his eyes fixed on the blank television screen. Sam, his best friend, was moving to Florida.

He crossed his arms, the action a conscious attempt to contain the turmoil. The comfortable weight of the sofa suddenly felt like a cage. He couldn't quite grasp the concept. He felt a deep sense of disorientation.

"When… when did you decide this?" he finally managed, his voice sounding oddly strained. Sam's explanation, a flurry of job prospects and sunny weather, washed over him, but made little sense. He couldn't help the feeling that he was experiencing a dream.
