The deed was in the attic. A small, unassuming document, for a property miles away. It was registered under his wife, Elizabeth’s, name. He'd never heard of this property, this place. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead.

He ran his hand over the worn pages, tracing the words, trying to make sense of them. He felt a strange detachment, as if watching a scene unfold from a great distance. He felt a physical pressure on his chest.

He wandered through the house, her presence, which had always been a source of comfort, now seemed like an enigma. Each object, each piece of furniture, seemed to taunt him with its silence. He couldn't shake the feeling of being utterly lost.
