He’d stumbled upon it by accident, a receipt shoved under a drawer liner. A large purchase, made weeks ago. A jewel. A very expensive jewel. His wife, Katherine, who he knew spent every penny they had together, had bought an extravagant gift. He sat down hard, the blood rushing in his ears.

He went to the kitchen and made a cup of coffee, but he didn't drink it. He just sat there, the mug cooling in his hands. He felt a profound sense of disorientation, as though he had stepped into a parallel universe.

He replayed their recent conversations, searching for any telltale signs, any clues he'd missed. But there were none. Nothing. He felt like his world was tilting on its axis.
