Now, I’m reading this thing and I’m confused, my stomach dropping. My face heated. Condo ownership? But I was renting. For years. I looked at the old, chipped door frame, the cracked tile in the bathroom. I leaned my head in my hands.

I started walking around, checking the locks on the doors, the windows. I felt a frantic need for safety, for security. I ran my hand over the familiar textures, the worn wooden floorboards, the slightly warped countertop. They were the same, but they felt different, somehow unreal. I slumped onto the couch.
