A cold dread seeped into Ethan's bones. He’d meticulously planned his outfit, his arrival, everything. But the moment he saw her, all his carefully constructed composure shattered. He felt a wave of cold rush through him.

He excused himself from the conversation he was having, citing the need to use the restroom. The lie tasted bitter in his mouth. He moved towards the restrooms, his steps strangely elongated, his focus locked on the ground.

As he closed the bathroom door, he rested his hands on the cold counter and leaned down to stare at his face in the mirror. His breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. He splashed water on his face, hoping to regain some semblance of control.
