Michael drummed his fingers on the countertop, the rhythm echoing the frantic beat of his heart. Across the kitchen table, Sarah was bubbling over with excitement. The prospect of a puppy was written all over her face.

He took a deep, shaky breath, trying to appear calm. “A dog is a big commitment,” he murmured, his voice barely audible above Sarah's enthusiastic chatter.

Her smile faltered slightly. He felt a pang of guilt, but the thought of a muddy paw print on his favorite rug sent a shiver down his spine. The responsibility felt overwhelming.

The phone vibrated in his pocket. He wanted to check the time, but decided against it, not wanting to make it obvious how badly he wanted to run away.
