The smell of popcorn, normally comforting, now felt oppressive in the dimly lit living room. David watched from the doorway as Mark researched exotic birds on his tablet. The screen’s glow cast dancing shadows on the walls.

He crossed his arms, the action a familiar shield. The idea of a macaw, with its piercing squawks and messy habits, filled him with unease.

Mark looked up, his eyes bright with enthusiasm. “Imagine, David! A splash of color, a bit of excitement!” David’s throat felt tight, as if something were blocking it.

The prospect of dealing with feathers and bird droppings triggered a wave of nausea. He took a hasty step backward, wanting to escape the discussion and all its implications.
