He had been enjoying a cup of tea, reading a book. Then, the world seemed to shift, and the ground beneath his feet trembled. He slammed the book shut, a feeling of unease washing over him. The wind, which had been a playful whisper moments before, had morphed into a malevolent roar.

The elm tree in Mrs. Rodriguez’s yard was notorious for its size. And now, it had finally succumbed. He went to the window to see. He knew there was a reason he had felt off all day.

He saw the tree. It was down, a dark and ominous form against the grey sky. He could feel the weight of his own worries pressing down on him. He felt a deep, instinctive tension in his shoulders, a premonition of complications to come.
