The florist had set the basket down on the porch with a gentle smile. Maria watched from the window, frozen. The blooms were a riot of color, a stark contrast to the dreary weather. She watched the delivery person leave then slowly opened the door. She felt her hands turn to ice.

She brought them inside, the weight of the arrangement seeming to increase with each step. She couldn't shake the feeling of being exposed. She glanced at the windows, at the empty street.
