The delivery startled her, but the lack of a card was worse. Amelia felt a cold dread creep into her bones. The bouquet, a mishmash of unfamiliar blossoms, looked so out of place. She stood there, frozen, the flowers feeling like a physical burden.

She placed the flowers on the kitchen table and began to pace. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves outside, set her teeth on edge. She felt exposed, vulnerable. Was this a mistake? She ran her fingers over her face. She felt an overwhelming need to hide.
