“Well, this is awkward,” thought Chloe, staring at the elaborate arrangement. A burst of lilies dominated the scene, filling her apartment with their cloying scent. Her heart was a hummingbird trapped in her chest. She had to sit down.

She sank into the nearest chair, her gaze fixed on the flowers. Her mind raced, sifting through a myriad of possibilities. Each thought brought a new wave of disquiet. This was a puzzle with pieces that didn’t fit. She didn't like puzzles. Not like this. Not when they involved something she couldn’t name.
