The denial of the scholarship felt like a physical blow. The air seemed to thicken around Ben, making it difficult to breathe. He slumped onto his bed, the springs groaning in protest. He looked up at the ceiling, feeling a sudden need for familiarity.

He began to think about the old, worn, and paint-chipped tree house that he and his brother had built in their backyard, a haven of imaginative games and whispered secrets. He could remember the smell of sawdust and fresh-cut wood, the feel of the rough planks beneath his feet. The tree house was long gone, demolished years ago, but the memory of its simple, sturdy construction offered a strange kind of comfort.

He closed his eyes and tried to picture the view from the window, imagining his brother's face as they played their games. The scent of pine needles, a ghost of the past, seemed to fill the room. He realized how much he missed that feeling of safety and shared adventure.
