The news felt like a physical weight, pressing down on Sarah. She crumpled the email and threw it in the wastebasket with more force than necessary. The sudden noise of the trash hitting the side of the can made her wince. She needed to escape. She grabbed her keys and headed for the door, her movements jerky and erratic.

She drove to the beach, the familiar scent of salt and seaweed filling her lungs as she stepped out of the car. She remembered building sandcastles with her family as a child, the sun warm on her skin, the sound of the waves a constant lullaby. She could almost taste the salt spray, feel the grainy sand between her toes.

She walked towards the shore, feeling the water caress her feet as it lapped against her legs. The wind whipped her hair across her face, and she felt a fleeting sensation of peace. She felt the ghost of a smile grace her face, a fleeting memory of the sun.
