The illuminated sign mocked him: “DELAYED.” His flight to Hawaii, and his anniversary with his wife, was stuck on the tarmac. Mark felt a wash of helplessness. He had spent months planning this trip, this celebration. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit.

He pulled out the small, velvet box from his pocket, the one containing the ring he was going to give her. He’d carefully chosen it, a symbol of their enduring love. He remembered the day they met, the way her laughter lit up the room.

He closed his eyes, remembering their first date, the silly jokes, the stolen kisses. He could almost feel her hand in his, feel the warmth of her presence beside him. The airport faded.
