"No!" My voice was a choked whisper, barely audible above the city noise. The bakery, "Sweet Surrender," a place where the air always smelled of heaven, was closing. I sank onto the nearest bench, the harsh concrete suddenly feeling cold and unforgiving. The memory of the first time I went there, a timid teenager, the kind woman behind the counter.

I felt a pang in my chest, a physical ache. I remembered the sugar-dusted windows, the warmth radiating from the ovens. The taste of their chocolate croissants, each bite a moment of pure bliss. Now, just emptiness. The scent of freshly baked bread, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a painful reminder of what was about to disappear.
