A wave of something akin to wistfulness washed over David as he unfolded the invitation. His high school years… it felt like another lifetime. He’d barely recognized himself in the included class photo. He found himself staring at the picture, searching for the awkward, acne-scarred teenager he once was.

He felt a tightness in his chest. His current life was good. Successful. But the invitation had stirred something deep within him. He found himself dialing his old friend, Kevin. They hadn’t spoken in years. The conversation was stilted at first, but soon, the years melted away.

“Remember that time we tried to sneak into that R-rated movie?” Kevin’s voice, a little rougher now, filled the phone.

David laughed. “And got caught by Mr. Henderson. He practically dragged us home.” He pictured the old school. The hallways smelled of floor wax and teenage angst. The memory hung in the air, warm and comforting.
