The cream-colored envelope, addressed in a familiar, looping script, sat on the kitchen counter like a small, silent accusation. Sarah picked it up, her fingers tracing the embossed lettering: “Hillcrest High School – Class of ’04 Reunion.” A smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she opened it. The glossy invitation, complete with a photo collage of smiling, youthful faces, felt like a portal.

She sighed, a tiny puff of air escaping her lungs. She wandered over to the living room, where the afternoon sun was painting stripes across the hardwood floor. Picking up a dusty photo album from the shelf, she sank onto the sofa. The scent of old paper and forgotten memories filled the air.

Flipping through the pages, her heart gave a little lurch. There was Mark, laughing with his arm around her at the homecoming game. And Emily, radiant at prom.
