Sarah traced the rim of her chipped mug, the ceramic warm against her fingertips. Outside, rain hammered the windowpane, blurring the familiar campus quad into a watercolor wash. She hadn’t felt this way since elementary school, when she’d clutch her mother’s hand, pleading for just five more minutes before bedtime. Now, though, it was her roommate, Emily, who’d betrayed her trust, reading the private thoughts scrawled within the pages of her journal. The act was a violation, yet the feeling it evoked was a peculiar ache.

The faint scent of Emily’s vanilla body spray lingered in the air, a phantom presence mocking her. She ran her fingers across the smooth cover of her diary, picturing her carefully chosen words now exposed to prying eyes. It felt like her secrets had been stolen, and the knowledge left a hollowness in her chest.

Sarah rose and walked to the window, the cold glass sending a shiver down her spine. The world outside, once full of possibility, seemed muted and distant. It had been years since she last felt like this, small and vulnerable.
