The scent of lavender from the diffuser in her room was now an unwelcome reminder of her roommate, Sam. Rachel had discovered that Sam had been reading her journal. It brought back the sensation of standing at the edge of the lake as a child, afraid to jump in, afraid to be exposed.

She walked across the room, the wood floorboards creaking under her weight. The memory of the secret places she and her sister had built in the backyard, her safe haven, played on her mind. Now, that same vulnerability had returned.

She looked at her reflection in the mirror, searching for the face of the girl she had been before the betrayal. The world, once painted in vibrant colors, was now in shades of grey.
