The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she pulled out the heavy trunk. Her fingers, still remembering the choreography of packing up her late grandmother’s things, unlatched the rusty clasps. She’d been avoiding this task, the final bastion of mementos left to sort. A sunbeam pierced the gloom, illuminating swirling dust motes, and her gaze drifted to the trunk’s contents. It was a trove of forgotten treasures, but she wasn't quite ready to face them yet.

She sank down onto the dusty floor, the scent of aged paper and mothballs filling her senses. The first thing she saw was a stack of photos, held together by a faded rubber band. Her grandmother always told her she was a shy, bookish girl, content in her own company. The first picture showed a woman, undeniably her grandmother, laughing wildly, arm slung around a man's shoulders at a raucous party.

Amelia's breath hitched. She picked up another. This one captured her grandmother, radiant and elegant in a flapper dress, dancing the Charleston. The stories she'd been told seemed to crumble, revealing a different person, a vibrant, adventurous spirit hidden beneath the veneer of quiet respectability.
