Michael ran a hand over his tired eyes, the late afternoon sun slanting through the dusty windows of his inherited house. He'd been sifting through his grandfather’s possessions, a task he'd put off for far too long. He’d always felt a pull toward the past, even before it became his legacy. Now, facing it, the weight of it felt all the heavier.

He found a small, leather-bound album tucked away in a drawer. As he opened it, a faint scent of old tobacco and something floral – his grandmother’s perfume – wafted up. The first few photos were the familiar ones: his grandfather, stern-faced in his military uniform, his grandmother, demure and smiling.

Then came a shock. A photo of his grandfather, younger, grinning ear-to-ear, arm-in-arm with a woman who wasn't his grandmother. The caption on the back, in his grandfather’s familiar handwriting, read “The love of my life.” Michael felt a coldness creep into his chest. The carefully constructed narrative of his family life felt like it was fracturing.
