The anticipation, a physical ache, settled in Olivia’s stomach as she waited for the meeting to begin. The conference room was stuffy. She noticed the dust motes dancing in the air, a reminder of the passage of time. The promotion, a coveted prize, was within her grasp.

She opened her eyes, and looked at the faces around her. They seemed to belong to a different world.
