The rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed to amplify the silence in the living room. Sarah, nestled on the sofa with a worn blanket, held a worn book of her grandmother's poems. Every line was a portal, summoning images of shared breakfasts and bedtime stories. A heavy envelope on the coffee table contained the news: a half-brother, a shadow sibling, a whisper of a life she didn't know. It was, as if the past, once solid, had become translucent.

The room, usually filled with the warmth of her own family, suddenly felt vast. She rose, walked over to the fireplace, and the cool touch of the marble mantle, a familiar sensation, didn't soothe her. She thought about her childhood home, the scent of her mother's perfume, the sound of her father's keys jingling as he came through the front door at the end of the day.
