The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small bakery, a fragrance that instantly transported Mark back to his childhood kitchen. His hands, though calloused from years of working in his own shop, remembered the feel of his mother’s flour-dusted apron. He took a bite of a warm croissant, the flaky pastry melting on his tongue, a taste that sparked a chain of memories. A thick letter lay on the counter, next to the cash register. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture. His father, a man of few words, would never have revealed such a secret.
