My fingers traced the chipped paint on the railing of my apartment balcony, the same action I'd used when I was little, tracing the faded patterns on my grandmother's embroidered pillowcases. Mr. Henderson, across the way, was having his pool cleaned. A uniformed crew meticulously scrubbed the turquoise depths, the water reflecting the late afternoon sun like a forgotten jewel.

He’d always seemed like just another retiree, puttering around his garden in his faded khakis, complaining about the squirrels. But now, seeing the sparkling tiles and the opulent chaise lounges being meticulously placed, I was stunned. It felt like discovering a secret buried long ago, something I’d always known, yet never truly grasped.

The warmth that always filled my chest when I thought of summer evenings, the fireflies, and the taste of watermelon on my chin, was replaced with a different kind of feeling. An unfamiliar unease. The realization sat on me, heavy, like the forgotten weight of my childhood backpack filled with books I thought I'd never use. Now, every single one seemed important.
