The scratchy wool of my favorite sweater, the one I hadn’t worn in years, felt rough against my skin. I wandered into the park, past the familiar swing set and the slightly worn slides, relics from a simpler time. Mrs. Abernathy, my neighbor, was there, meticulously arranging a picnic basket.

I'd always known her as a friendly woman who walked her dachshund, Winston, in the park. She seemed kind, not rich. Today, she was unpacking silverware that gleamed in the sunlight, crystal glasses, and a bottle of champagne. I stood, transfixed, suddenly remembering the taste of sugar cookies, the feel of a worn teddy bear.

The sight of her, so effortlessly elegant, the picnic so decadent, brought forth a sudden ache. Not of sadness, but something akin to it. It was like the echo of laughter in an empty room, a memory of a life I’d envisioned but never lived, a life that apparently existed next door all along.
