The news arrived in an email, the words "Condo Conversion" displayed on his screen. He felt a sharp pang. His apartment. His sanctuary. Now, another development.

He sat for a moment, letting the chair carry his weight. He had to go to the grocery store. He took the same route he always did. The familiar faces, the familiar trees along the sidewalk felt wrong today, as if they were all just waiting for him to leave.

He took a shower, letting the warm water cascade over him. Then, with a heavy feeling, he pulled on his favorite, old, worn-out t-shirt, the one he had worn for the last decade, and he spent the next few hours sitting on his couch, staring out the window, watching the rain.
