He stared at the blank screen, the cursor blinking mockingly. The new intern, Jessica, was talking, but her words seemed distant, meaningless. He just kept thinking about how quickly time had passed.

"So, the first thing is the formatting…" Jessica started, but Ben raised a hand to stop her.

“It’s all pretty standard. You’ll be fine.” His voice was flat and dismissive. He knew the formatting rules inside and out, every trick, every shortcut.

He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. He stared out the window, at the world outside, and at the prospect of a future he hadn't planned for. He ignored her questions, and pretended not to hear.
